Abstract

This article reviews some proposals, both from theater and performance, that have used technology as a form of scenic expression, exposing the body and its physical and acting limits; and as a spatial expression, modifying dimensions by means of lighting elements, building virtual sets and making remote communications possible to bring together actors from different parts of the world on the same stage. This research aims to answer, through a critical review of theatrical and performative milestones of the 20th and 21st centuries, in what way can new technologies be constituted as elements of scenic-spatial expression? It is essential to refer to some precursors such as Sterlac and his theories of the obsolete body or the set designer and artistic director of The Magic Lantern of Prague, Josef Svoboda. For these creators, technology was a fundamental part of their practices, not just a support for stage actions or a replacement for the old painted backdrops
