Abstract The musical preferences of young people have a greater or lesser impact on their lifestyles, this is how these preferences and the factors that condition them have been an important research focus for the psychology of music and music education during the last few thirty years. In the present article a literary review is made around the aspects that influence the taste and musical preferences, emphasizing the importance of music for emotional / emotional development, social bonding between peers and the construction of one's identity among young people. The findings presented will be related to the pedagogical scope of the youth musical world for the music classroom, especially for the development of attitudes and acquisition of learning related to respect for musical diversity, expressed in the curricular bases and study programs for the subject of Music elaborated by the MINEDUC, in the Seventh to Second level of Secondary Education in Chile. Towards the future, it is necessary to continue advancing in research and pedagogical works that address the didactic use of the genres or styles of music preferred by adolescents, both for the development of attitudes and values, and for the enhancement of specific musical abilities.
