Abstract

This paper proposes that certain cinematographic manifestations of the sixties and seventies are part of what is currently called, more appropriately, essay film. On the one hand, they are genuine and singular cinematographic pieces in relation to the European essay film, marking an important difference by constituting themselves as material reflections and not strictly formal. Likewise, the Latin American essay film of those years establishes roots, linked to politics, criticism and aesthetics, very different from the current definitions, of an analytical and linguistic nature. Without being modern, it builds alternative subjective processes, materializes cinematographic thought and discusses important concepts, such as Deleuze's image-time. Without elaborating a list, this paper generates a conceptual framework in which certain pieces from the period can be considered essays.
