La revisión se basa en un enfoque empírico que sintetiza los hallazgos de estudios previos para proporcionar al lector una comprensión realista de la relevancia y las limitaciones de la disciplina. Para ello, se utilizan y comentan metaanálisis, los cuales integran todos los estudios sobre un área determinada para estimar un efecto medio o tendencia central, evaluar su variabilidad y analizar los moderadores que explican dicha variabilidad. A partir de estos hallazgos, se plantean directrices para avanzar hacia una psicología social basada en la réplica acumulativa con el fin de reforzar una visión realista de los fenómenos psicosociales, así como la validez interna, externa y transcultural y la potencia estadística de nuestra disciplina.
